Sign-up bonus details

American Express has just announced a 60,000-Avios sign-up bonus for the British Airways American Express Premium Plus Card. The offer is valid until 6 October 2026 and requires a £6,000 spend in the first three months. The free British Airways American Express Credit Card also offers a 10,000-Avios bonus for a £2,000 spend in the same period.

The Premium Plus card carries a £300 annual fee, but a pro-rated refund is issued if the card is cancelled after the bonus is earned. In contrast, the free card has no annual fee.

Eligibility and spend requirements

To qualify for the 60,000-Avios bonus on the Premium Plus card, applicants must not have held either the Premium Plus or the free British Airways American Express card in the past 24 months. Holding other American Express cards, such as the Platinum Card, Preferred Rewards Gold, Nectar, or any business-class AmEx cards, does not affect eligibility. A supplementary card in the applicant’s name can also be used to meet the spend target, with the Avios credited to the household account.

The free card’s bonus rules are stricter: applicants must not have held any personal American Express card in the past 24 months.

Card terms and benefits

The Premium Plus card offers 1.5 Avios per £1 of qualifying spend (currently 1.25, but the rate is 1.5 for the offer period). It also provides a Companion Voucher after £15,000 of annual spend, valid for two years and usable on BA, Aer Lingus or Iberia flights in any cabin. The voucher allows booking two Avios flights for the price of one, or a single ticket at half Avios price for a solo traveller.

Tier points are awarded at a rate of one point per £10 spent from 1 April 2027, capped at 3,000 points per membership year. For the current membership year, tier points are awarded as follows:

SpendTier points
£15,000750
£20,000750
£25,0001,000

The free card offers 1 Avios per £1 of qualifying spend, no bonus on British Airways spend, and a Companion Voucher after £15,000 spend that is valid for one year and limited to Economy.

The Premium Plus card’s representative APR is 135.7 % variable, including the annual fee, with a 29.1 % APR on purchases. The free card’s representative APR is 29.1 % variable.

Income requirements are straightforward: a personal income of £35,000 is required for the Premium Plus card, while the free card requires £20,000. Household income is no longer considered.

For a deeper comparison of the APRs and income thresholds, see our stats page. The annual fee and tier point details can be cross-checked on the standings page.

Is the Premium Plus card worth keeping long-term?

Most readers will say “yes” if they can spend £15,000 each year to earn the Companion Voucher and accumulate enough Avios for a premium-cabin redemption. If that is not realistic, the card still offers a valuable 60,000-Avios bonus, and the applicant can downgrade to the free card later, receiving a pro-rated fee refund.

The free card remains attractive for those who cannot meet the £6,000 spend target or who prefer a no-fee option, but the Premium Plus card’s bonus and companion benefits make it the stronger choice for frequent flyers.
