Lifetime status is a sought-after perk among frequent travelers, offering long-term benefits for loyal customers. However, achieving it often requires significant commitment, with high thresholds that may deter even the most dedicated guests. Despite this, some travelers, like the author who recently achieved Marriott Bonvoy Lifetime Platinum, find themselves reaching these milestones without actively pursuing them.

Currently, only three major hotel chains offer lifetime status: Hilton Honors, World of Hyatt, and Marriott Bonvoy. Other chains like Accor, Radisson Rewards, and IHG One Rewards do not provide this benefit.

## Hilton Honors Lifetime Diamond Status

Hilton Honors introduced Lifetime Diamond status in 2015, requiring members to maintain Diamond status for 10 full calendar years while meeting one of the following criteria:

| Requirement | Details | |---|---| | Eligible Spending | $200,000 | | Nights Stayed | 1,000 |

It's important to note that the 10 years of Diamond status must be full calendar years. For example, earning Diamond status in April 2027 would only count 2028 towards the 10-year requirement. Hilton previously required two million base points, equivalent to $200,000 of spend, but adjusted the criteria to focus on cash spent due to changes in point earnings across different brands. There is no online tracking for progress towards lifetime status; members must contact Hilton Honors directly.

## World of Hyatt Lifetime Globalist Status

World of Hyatt offers Lifetime Globalist status to members who earn one million base points, equivalent to $200,000 of spending. Unlike Hilton, there is no online method to check lifetime base points, though some members report seeing the total on monthly statements. Lifetime Globalist members receive additional perks, including four Suite Upgrade Awards, a Category 1-7 Free Night Award, and five Guest of Honor Awards annually, which provide Globalist status for a single stay.

## Marriott Bonvoy Lifetime Status

Marriott Bonvoy offers three levels of lifetime status:

| Status Level | Nights Required | Years of Status Required | |---|---|---| | Lifetime Silver Elite | 250 nights | 5 years of Silver Elite or higher | | Lifetime Gold Elite | 400 nights | 7 years of Gold Elite or higher | | Lifetime Platinum Elite | 600 nights | 10 years of Platinum Elite or higher |

Members can track their progress through the Bonvoy app under the 'Account' tab. Notably, Elite Night Credits earned from Marriott's UK credit and debit cards count towards these requirements. The author achieved Lifetime Platinum primarily through these card benefits.

## Alternative Ways to Achieve Status

Both Marriott and Hilton offer status through UK payment cards, which can undermine the rationale for pursuing lifetime status. For example:

- **Marriott Bonvoy**: The Platinum Card from American Express and the Marriott Bonvoy Premium Debit Card provide year-by-year Gold Elite status. Spending £15,000 annually on the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card also grants Gold Elite status.

- **Hilton Honors**: The American Express Platinum Card and the Hilton Honors Plus Debit Card offer Gold status, with the latter costing £150 per year.

IHG One Rewards does not offer lifetime status but provides year-on-year Platinum status with the IHG x Revolut Elite Debit Card and Silver status with the IHG x Revolut Essential Debit Card.

## The Value of Lifetime Status

While lifetime status can be appealing, its long-term value is uncertain. The author, who achieved Marriott Bonvoy Lifetime Platinum, finds the guaranteed benefits valuable but acknowledges that these could be removed or devalued at any time. Additionally, changes in company policies, such as British Airways' adjustment of lifetime status targets, can render previous efforts futile. Even when companies survive, benefits can be downgraded, as seen with American Airlines' introduction of a new status level that pushed Lifetime Platinum members down the pecking order.

For those considering pursuing lifetime status, it's essential to weigh the long-term benefits against the potential for policy changes and devaluations.
