British Airways has unveiled a comprehensive refresh of its First Class soft product, encompassing food, drink, tableware, bedding, sleepwear, and amenity kits. The airline shared details of the new standard, which began rolling out on October 1. The changes precede the debut of new First Class seats on refurbished A380 aircraft.

British Airways is promising a new service standard with updated crew training. Travelers will notice immediate differences in meal presentation and comfort. The airline aims to raise perceived luxury through a more cohesive design approach across all service touchpoints.

Tableware and glassware innovations

The new tableware and glassware were designed in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent based chinaware designers William Edwards and Richard Brendon. Every plate, dish, and cup has been re-imagined. The collection features minimalist white and blue earthenware, replacing the previous waveform pattern. The new gear is plain white, with plates taking on modern flat forms rather than traditional shapes.

Cutlery in the new tableware is designed by Studio William. Wine glasses were developed in collaboration with Richard Brendon and wine expert Jancis Robinson.

Bedding and sleepwear updates

New bedding includes a herringbone day blanket and navy tartan sleepwear. The light grey day blanket features a checkerboard design. It is complemented by a navy-blue cushion with subtle detailing. Most of the bedding is in white or grey, with a new statement cushion in navy featuring a large herringbone design.

The new pyjamas are in unisex navy blue with tartan detailing on the inside. This tartan is a reintroduction of the design commissioned for the airline's World Series liveries in the late 1990s. Traditional weaver Peter MacDonald created the new plaid. British Airways said: "Inspired by the view from Peter's studio, it is called 'Benyhone,' from the Gaelic phrase meaning 'Mountain of the Birds.'"

Crew will make the bed on request with a new luxury mattress topper, a lightweight cotton duvet, and a redesigned pillow.

Menu and dining experience

British Airways will continue to offer a 'dine on demand' style service in First Class. Menus now include a 'Grill' section, allowing passengers to build their own meal from select proteins, sides, and sauces. Beef cheeks, once a perennial menu item, appear to have been removed.

A sample menu from a London to Seattle flight illustrates the new offerings. Starters include Scottish salmon tartare with avocado and caviar, and aged heritage beef carpaccio. Main courses are split into classic mains, the 'Grill', and 'Signature Mains'.

Amenity kits and rollout timeline

Elements of the new service have been rolling out in stages. The new crockery, bedding, and menus became available on flights from October 1. The new amenity kits began appearing on October 6.

These kits, crafted in partnership with heritage brand Swain, replace the previous Temperley London line. Two unisex designs inspired by heritage suitcases come in royal blue or cream. Inside are skincare products by Wildsmith from its Circadian Rhythm collection.

Wildsmith will also provide its hand & body wash, hand & body lotion, shampoo and conditioner across all of British Airways' First and Club lounges, as well as in the Concorde Room, with that rollout beginning in November. The refresh was presumably timed to coincide with the delayed introduction of the new First Class seat on refurbished A380s. Future refinements may follow based on passenger feedback.
