Southwest Credit Card Perks Boost Travel Savings and Seat Selection
Southwest Airlines' March 2025 fare and seating changes make cardholder benefits like free checked bags and seat selection more valuable, helping offset annual fees for frequent flyers.

Southwest Airlines implemented sweeping changes to fare classes and seating policies in March 2025, eliminating open seating and introducing fee-based bag charges. The airline's suite of credit cards now provides critical benefits that directly counter these new costs, offering free checked bags and seat selection perks to cardholders and their travel companions.
Cardholder Baggage and Seat Benefits
All Southwest cardholders receive their first checked bag free when they provide their Rapid Rewards account number at booking. This benefit extends to up to eight additional passengers on the same reservation. Following the end of open seating, cardholders also gained enhanced seat selection options.
Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card and Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card holders can select a Standard or Preferred seat at booking for themselves and up to eight others on the reservation. All cardholders receive complimentary boarding with Group 5 or earlier for their entire party. Also, cardholders and their companions are eligible for unlimited upgrades to extra legroom seats starting 48 hours before departure.
Financial Value of Free Baggage
The free first checked bag benefit generates significant savings, especially for groups. With Southwest now charging $45 per person for the first checked bag on most fares, the savings add up quickly.
| Scenario | Potential Savings |
|---|---|
| Two passengers, round trip | $180 |
| Party of nine, one-way flight | $405 |
These savings apply to standard-sized baggage only. For an individual on a round-trip flight, the baggage savings alone could nearly offset the entire $99 annual fee of the Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card.
Annual Fee Offset and Point Value
Cardholders can further offset annual fees through statement credits and point valuations. The Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card, for instance, carries a $299 annual fee but offers an 80,000-point welcome bonus after spending $5,000 in the first three months. According to NerdWallet’s valuations, Rapid Rewards points are worth 1.4 cents each.
Anniversary bonus points, which range from 3,000 to 9,000 points across the card portfolio, provide between $42 and $126 in value annually, effectively lowering the net cost of card membership. Other valuable perks include a 25% savings on inflight Wi-Fi and drinks, issued as statement credits, and a $120 statement credit for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS every four years.
Earning Rates and Future Changes
The cards offer strong earning rates on travel and everyday spending. Cardholders earn 4x points on Southwest purchases, 2x points at gas stations, restaurants, hotel accommodations booked directly, and on local transit, and 1x points on all other purchases. There are no foreign transaction fees.
Important changes are coming to the loyalty program. Welcome bonuses currently count toward Companion Pass qualification until December 31, 2026. Starting January 1, 2027, qualifying for a Companion Pass will require 140,000 Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs) or 100 qualifying flights, up from previous requirements. Also, A-List status will become Silver status in 2027, requiring 35,000 TQPs or 25 qualifying flights. From 2027 onward, all Southwest cards will allow cardholders to earn TQPs toward elite status through card spending.
These cards are best suited to semi-frequent Southwest flyers who travel several times a year but do not earn elite status organically. Alternatives may be better for those who rarely fly Southwest, already hold A-List status, or want flexible travel rewards. Cardholders can select standard or preferred seats at booking for up to eight additional passengers on the same reservation.
